Snoring surgery is usually a multi-level procedure and is performed as a combination of several surgical techniques. Contrary to popular belief, snoring cannot be completely eliminated with nasal surgeries alone, although it can be significantly reduced.
Snoring surgery involves intervention in various parts of the airway. Areas such as the nose, soft palate, and the base of the tongue may be surgically treated, and each region may require a different type of procedure. Although these multi-level surgeries may not completely eliminate snoring, they can greatly reduce its severity.
Let’s take a look at the types of snoring surgeries:
It is aimed to correct the curvatures in the airway for obstructions in the nasal cavities that increase snoring and sleep apnea. In addition, the flesh in the nose is burned and reduced by radiofrequency method. The effect of nasal surgeries is seen between 3 and 6 weeks on average. A comprehensive examination is required before nasal surgery, which should be evaluated not only in terms of sleep quality but also in terms of its contribution to daily life.
Severe sinus obstructions, presence of polyps and obstructive chronic sinusitis can also cause snoring and contribute to sleep apnea. In these patients, endoscopic sinus surgery should be performed to open the blocked sinuses and nasal passages to ensure adequate air passage.
The main cause of snoring is the obstruction of the airway by tissues in the pharynx. The tissues here are tonsils, soft palate, small tongue and tongue root. With the operation to be performed, some of the tissues in the region are removed and the airway is opened. In addition, radiofrequency or placokinetic surgery methods, including suspension, shortening and tightening, can also be applied to these tissues.
The purpose of tongue and tongue root surgery is to bring the tongue root forward to facilitate breathing. Although it is a complicated surgical procedure, it is not very suitable for obese people. Snoring prosthesis can be considered as an alternative to this operation, which aims to achieve a result in one go.
These are procedures performed on bone tissues. The aim is to shift the upper and lower jaw forward. It is generally preferred if the lower jaw is behind or small since birth. Sometimes the surgery is completed by breaking the lower jaw and positioning it forward. The tongue root is also brought forward and repositioned. Although it is a successful and effective method, the recovery period is between 45 and 60 days.
